Re: Science Fiction Trivia

All of those are good - Brain Wave and Flowers for Algernon were the ones I particularly expected. This puts Disembodied into the hot seat!

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Let's have five stories, films, whatever in which someone or something experiences a temporary or permanent LOSS or INCREASE in intelligence. OK, I'll throw a bent three-cent bit into the hat. How does the "totally ordinary Joe" (whose name I forget) who gets suspended-animationed into the future i...

OK, wasn't expecting it to be me, but if it is... Let's have five stories, films, whatever in which someone or something experiences a temporary or permanent LOSS or INCREASE in intelligence. No more than one from any given author / universe, regardless of the genre. And no, computer upgrade manuals...

Re: Windows User Migrating to Linux?

I found out I could get Windows 10 Pro for £19.99 from Softwaregeeks.co.uk so I bit the bullet and installed it tonight, with Open Shell to make it behave like Windows 7. I'll probably try Linux again too, but not until I've made sure everything is OK on Windows.

Now if it was Bowie or Pink Floyd I'd have easy answers, but no idea for Led Zeppelin.

Re: Windows User Migrating to Linux?

I'll probably try Mint Linux again, it was the one I liked best when I was playing with Linux on a netbook a few years ago, ran well on very limited hardware. But not right now, I've had the week from hell and I'm minus a LOT of sleep, really don't want to mess up!

Re: Windows User Migrating to Linux?

To be honest, I REALLY don't want to risk getting stuck part-way through an "upgrade" if something goes wrong, and though I know it's possible to configure Windows 10 to behave like 7, I gather that it isn't easy. I think a completely separate OS install is less likely to be problematic, and that's ...

Windows User Migrating to Linux?

I'm mainly a Windows user though I've also got a Macbook and dabbled in Linux from time to time, not recently, but with Microsoft dropping support for Windows 7, the only alternative on offer Windows 10 at £100+ for an upgrade now, and Microsoft recommending you buy a new PC instead, I'm looking mor...

Re: Science Fiction Trivia

Charles Stross - I'd recommend the Laundry series but that's Lovecraftian horror with spy and SF tropes rather than true SF, so let's go for the Merchant Princes series, which is SF initially disguised as fantasy: The Family Trade (2004) The Hidden Family (2005) The Clan Corporate (2006) The Merchan...

Not so much an enemy race as an enemy sidekick race: Ogrons.

Does the Nestene Consciousness count?
I'll take Ogrons but not Nestene Consciousness, since it's always referred to by both names.

One to go!
