I'm working on my own HUD already
I don't know what I'm gonna call it yet. I intend to have it dynamic appearances, such as different dials in different situations. I'm yet to figure out correct image scaling, but I already had a look. I'm not quite sure yet about how positioning works... it seems to be limited between 0 and 256 on left and right - and top and bottom.
Anyways, I'm thinking of a design like that:
The "lines" around the main HUD areas change depending on the situation you are in - which I'd like to call "Cruise" (nothing around you, so deep space or not mass-locked), "Event" (Mass-locked, station approach, etc), and obviously "Battle". Like I said the dials change depending on the situation. The top dials can be seen, probably Speed and Altitude.
The scanner also changes its coloring - and what you see is just the background of it. The real scanner is then overlaid on top of that. The image is just an image to provide me with an idea how it might look in the game, so don't take that for serious.
In the top left I just put in an placeholder MFD design. This might change.
I'll update it when it's progressing, and obviously when it's complete.
