Yeah... it becomes tiresome reading some of it. I've had to add a couple of people to my ignore list.

Well this is always the case with 'online' games. I've seen the same thing in racing games, RPG's and so on. Let's say it looks all familiar. I do not take part in such discussions but I am in 'observation' mode :D

Yup, I ignored most threads before this and I continue to ignore even more of them now. Silly stuff, but unfortunately very common on online forums.
Author of Tales from the Frontier - official Elite 4 anthology.
Author of Marcan Rayger adventures - unofficial fan-fic novellas set in the Frontier universe.

I suspect if we decreed that everyone had to play the same version of the game, down to the OXP set, semi-competitively, things would become rapidly uncivil very quickly. Rather Frontier than me!

Well someone had better quote this the next time someone mentions/suggests an online version of oolite!

<nods vehemently> I'd not wish to be a mod on the Frontier forum - no way!

Does anyone know how oolite is regarded on other forums like frontier?

Are we a seen as a bunch of programming hippies compared to the cut and thrust of Frontier? If so, good. For tinkering about with something does exist is far better for the soul than playing a locked down thing that half doesn't exist. I'm sure in the fullness of time it will all be lovely, new and fluffy. Until that shining day, I fear that game is currently causing more anger than it is curing.

Some people really are not doing their blood pressure any good at all.

I've been pleasantly surprised by the number of people on the FD forum who play/have played Oolite - we even have a small thread over there.

This might be something which Kickstarter projects are vulnerable to. People stump up their money at the outset, on a promise - in effect, buying a game which only exists in their imagination. Then, perhaps, as dreams and reality begin inevitably to diverge, they start to feel short-changed ("That's not what docking was like in my head! Change it at once!").

Further to what Cody said, from what I've seen, Oolite seems very much respected by all who've encountered it.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
