Build your own model ship

Post by Thargoid »

Just found this site and was pondering, with some of our ship designs plus their service, instant line of Oolite toy ships?

Well there's no harm uploading some of the designs and seeing how much they cost. As long as they meet all the criteria of course. Where are they based, I couldn't find an address.

I'm guessing Holland, as the contact page says:
For any questions or comments you can contact one of these three Shapies, all located in the Netherlands
and the names look either Dutch or German.

Those names are Dutch, (not German).

Well that's not too bad. Did simonB or Griff want to plug one of their super nasties in, so we can all have a mini-stroke over the price? :D

I assume the way they do it means that price will be approximately the same for all ships, I doubt they count polygons on the ships to decide how much they'd cost. But, I'd definitely buy a model of a Simonb python if it was reasonably priced.
I shot him back first. That is to say, I read his mind and fired before he would have fired on me. No, sir, he wasn't a fugitive.

Griff Coby 3 / F-d-L / Sidewinder for me.

Although if Simon publishes his Thargoid with twin torus rings in the body, THAT would be a cool model.

or you could make one out of paper, like this guy:
http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/ecp/frontier.htm
I've seen a page with all the paper models for original elite (same guy who did an animation of a Moray Star Boat landing in water, I think, but I can't find the page right now.

Would that be the 'Witch Space' site at mackayj.doosh.net.? Unfortunately his site seems to have died and the paper models pages were some of the pages I didn't PDF print off the site. Dang! :x

I've flirted with paper model craft in the past and it would be a good way of bring the classic ships to life. There are several programs that can convert 3d-modelling files into paper models for printing. The most famous is Pepakura Designer. Paper model craft is really big in Asia, especially in Japan, but all the software I've found is Japanese. Pepakura does have an English version, the only downside is that its' shareware.

If you want to do some plastic modelling, there a quite a few companies that will make stuff from 3d model files. Try goggling under resin-casting and sample casting. Where I'm at, I've been led to understand that my local polytechnic will do casting for you, if you cover the material cost for using their laser set resin fabricator, so try your local tech/college.

If you want more links on modelling try Starshipmodeler.com as they seem to be the most accessible of the specialist modeller sites.

No wonder it didn't show up on the google...
(Side note: my browser says "google" is spelled wrong.. It should be "Google" according to firefox, a browser made by a "non-profit" company that makes 4 million dollars a year bending over to google.)
I'm sure somebody around these forums either has or knows someone who has a CNC milling machine...

Did'ja know that you can build your own open source CNC machines. Google it and be stunned by the variety of them. (The EvilMadScientists.com Candy Fab is a fav' of mine. Think of it, sweet peppermint Coby 3's )

I'll have a dig around my web-links dumps and see if I can find a gpl/os paper modelling program.

You need one of these - we used to have one where I worked - for demos we used to make balls within balls or ocassionally a ship in a bottle - very cool!)

Somebody really should upload a model - even of a standard cobby - just to see how much it would cost.
