[Solved] The ultimate crash

I'm running Oolite on XUbuntu in fullscreen.

When I get killed and am presented with "Press space", Oolite hangs with the screen jittering between the current and previous frame (I can't think of another way to describe it).

End result is I can't Alt-Tab out of Oolite and have to hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to jump into a terminal, log on again, and kill the Oolite process.

Any ideas what's going on?

No concrete idea yet, but there might be something relevant inside Oolite's logs (you can find those in the ~/.Oolite/Logs/ directory).

Before I forget: some crashes might be triggered by the presence of fairly processor intesive oxps. If that's the case, try and play without any oxp, and see if the problem perstists. If it doesn't, you can always try and play with half of your oxps removed, and if there are no crashes the oxp that triggered the problem was in the lot you've removed... by a process of elimination you should then be able to pinpoint which oxp is causing Oolite to give you trouble.

Once you've found exactly what happens, it'd be great if you let us know, so we can try and duplicate your problems, and - in the case of oxp trouble - hopefully make Oolite more 'OXP proof'!

I have the same problem on Xubuntu: when I die, the game hangs.

I stopped playing full-screen, playing in windowed mode now, your post reminds me of why I did that. The game usually still hangs when I get killed, but now I can at least easily close and restart it.

Bugbear and Gimbal Locke: I am also using Xubuntu (version 11.10 64-bit) but do not get crashes. Post a Latest.log and:
- I'll tell you what OXPs you have that I don't;
- I'll install the OXPs you have and see if I crash too
if that would help.

Although if both of you (Bugbear and Gimbal Locke) post complete Latest.log files, the common factor(s) may be obvious straight away.

I've had the same sort of thing happen occasionally (Debian rather than XUbuntu), and F12 to switch from fullscreen to windowed has worked for being able to kill the program easily. The Latest.log is full of "failed to reset Javascript engine" errors (one every few milliseconds).

When I very first installed Oolite on this Xubuntu I copied all the OXPs from my previous Windows setup and got 7.6 Mb Latest.log. I reinstalled a selection of those OXPs and haven't seen the problem since.

After pressing space I hear "target lost", program freezes, the log keeps growing until I kill the game.

The log was too long because I have a lot of OXPs, so I started disabling OXPs.

The crashes stopped after disabling WildShips, which seems to be the culprit in my case. But I did have crashes earlier after dying, before I installed WildShips.

Hmm, you have the same shader error that Mandoman is reporting about the WildShips OXP wildShips_enginePlasma.fragment shader. But I also see other shader errors in the log too - have you updated your graphics drivers lately or have you always had the other errors too (aside from the WildShisp one)?

The other OXPs which give errors (Killer Wolf's Venom & Vampires) are OXPs which I only recently installed. Before I got troubles from Shady Sung ships (stopped using them).

My graphics card, the Intel HD 3000 is somewhat infamous. I do not know what Storm did exactly between Tionisla Chronicle Array v.1.02 and v.1.03, and I have no clue if it is related to the present problem, but it was something which made TCA behave correctly on the Intel HD 3000 graphics.

I'm using the standard drivers which came with Xubuntu, never touched them.

My guess would be Wild Ships, because my computer is fairly underpowered in terms of both system and graphics memory, and its textures are big. I'll try running without it for a bit and see what happens. If that fixes it, then this error might be a consequence of running short of memory on the Javascript reset attempt.

EDIT: confirmed. Going to interstellar space and picking a fight with an entire Thargoid battlefleet:
- without Wildships, no crash
- with Wildships, crash every time.
Given that Wildships itself doesn't add anything to interstellar space, I think it's probably the memory shortage it causes on my computer which is the problem. I wonder if when memory is short - and perhaps starting to run into swap files - the 20ms delay to usually avoid the race condition might not be long enough.

Have you tried setting the max texture size hidden setting, to limit the texture sizes?

There seems to be a problem with WildShips in general. I have an OK nVidia graphics card, and have never had a graphics related problem related to Oolite so far. With WildShips installed I get a CTD every time.

Just a quick update - with no OXPs, a "Press space" moment does not result in a crash.

Time to do some divide and conquer on my OXPs to see which of my OXPs are responsible.
