If it's any help, the uname -a output from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is

Code: Select all

Linux ubuntu 3.2.0-24-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 25 08:43:22 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

SandJ wrote:So I was wrong to assume you are using a Ubuntu 12.04 derivative. Your Linux Mint 12 should be much more stable than that - especially since I now understand that is a design intention for Mint.
Their goal of stability (and the stability I actually get from it) is what brought me from Ubuntu to Mint. As I was saying, on Ubuntu 12.04 one of the worst things to happen was X completely freezing with Google earth. Also, as a composer, I wasn't a fan of timidity not working - it worked for a while, and then stopped, even reinstalling it didn't seem to help.

I did get a newer kernel installed and running - doesn't seem to be any problem so far:
Linux **Me**-DX4860 3.2.0-030200rc4-generic #201112012035 SMP Fri Dec 2 01:36:30 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I wonder though if the kernel was just part of the problem and if its an xserver-xorg issue. (I'm also realizing just how many parts there to xorg). The current running version of xserver-xorg-video-intel is 2:2.15.901-lubuntu2.1 (up from ***.lunbuntu2.0 before I updated it yesterday). The xorg-core version is 2:1.10.4-lubuntu4.2. I'm curious what version you're running with on Xubuntu.

Interesting - they are pretty damn close, with mine now 3.2.0-030200rc4. I'm going to do some searching about xserver drivers now. Wish me luck :)

I've looked into xserver a bit. It looks like I have the newest version for Oneiric, judging by the listings at this ppa:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xs ... ideo-intel

I'm even more stumped now.... :(

On my Xubuntu 11.10 where Oolite runs well:

xserver-xorg-core @ 2:1.10.4-1ubuntu4.2
xserver-xorg-video-intel @ 2:2.15.901-1ubuntu2.1

There's a screendump of all things xserver on my PC: Image

Well.... it looks as if we have the exact same xserver versions running. The plot thickens even more - Mint 12 is based on Ubuntu 11.10, your running Xubuntu 11.10 and indeed I was rolling with Ubuntu 11.10 for a while (with oolite running fine). I had actually messed up the system (not terribly, but annoyingly enough) which is why I thought "yeah, let's move up to the next version" - but I realized I didn't like 12.04 very much, so I went to Mint, and the rest is history.

I guess I was barking up the wrong tree with xserver. I really am completely stumped now - recall that I can exit the station, fly around, even buy commodities, but as soon as I go to the short range scanner the computer completely flips out (oddly - even the current star system information works fine (F7), which has some heavy graphics to it with the rotating planet in the corner).

To clarify : with short range scanner you mean the F6 screen while docked ?

after seeing replies from other posters in this thread, it is now clear why you couldn't find it.
xf86-video-intel is the name of the driver used by upstream (in this case the Xorg people), but *buntu doesn't use the upstream name.

I was just discovering this myself today while I was searching for information about it :P

F6 while docked or in flight gives the same nonsense - about a 2 or 3 second delay, and then the window starts oscillating between full screen and window (all while showing an incomplete short range chart - the top half is there, but the bottom half where the information is displayed is just black) and I must go tty (ctrl+alt+f1) to regain control of the system (that's when I'm lucky - sometimes it freezes the computer completely).

a) What about when you use the <6> key instead of <F6>?

b) How do you set / view the keyboard shortcuts in Mint? [ Applications, System Tools, System Settings, Keyboard, Shortcuts ] Is F6 set to do something? [... Custom Shortcuts]

I don't suppose this will help at all.

Booted from the Linux Mint 12 amd64 DVD. Using it as a LiveCD, installed Oolite v1.76 for 64 bit machines. Ran it, launched and pressed F6:

Edit: and again in Full Screen:

Honestly, I used the F6 reference because it seems to be the more "official" key-binding, I actually use the numbers 99% of the time (I did after all grow up with a TI-99/4a which didn't have Function buttons, just a function button that modified a number, so even though I just found Oolite last December, and not a long time player, I still prefer plain number buttons in this context if they're available).

About the key-bindings in Mint - the Gnome shell is the same as Ubuntu, but MATE is a bit different - I think that's actually an official bug with MATE is that several of the shortcuts aren't working, but I like the interface. It's not quite completely mature, but then, it seems like most of the desktops are not quite yet mature with all the changes that have been made lately (KDE4 and Gnome 3). I think if I have to wind up rolling back to some more "pure" form of *ubuntu 11.10, I think I might give Xubuntu a try. Wikipedia says that Torvalds uses Xfce, so that's got to say something.... but after all the hours of a reinstall (I use a couple hefty programs like Matlab, for example), and my general happiness with Mint's performance otherwise, I'd hate to go that avenue. Mint is really speedy and stable.

I might have to start a thread on the mint forums to get this resolved.....

And in Full Screen mode too.

<Shift>-<F> shows the frame rate (FPS), how much 'stuff' is in the system (Entities), the current Time Acceleration Factor (TAF) and some other stuff.

I do not have any NVIDIA drivers running at this point, like I do when running in Xubuntu.

I wonder why I have so many OpenGL drivers on in my log. I found something in the Mint forums that might help, I need to reboot and test...

Yay! It's working! Adding these ppa's, refreshing synaptic and updating all the associated "libgl1-mesa" files did the trick!

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main

I can get back to my bounty-head!
